Christie
Roberts

Christie is a professional
engineer and new President of Gertsch-Baker
& Associates, a local design firm. She heads up the renovat=
ions
department, whose latest fun project was conceptual plans for
Rehabilitation of the Grand Encampment Opera House. This p=
roject
is on track to receive funding from a Community Facilities Grant
through the Wyoming Business Council this year. Downtown, we ha=
ve
renovated High Performance Sports Medicine and the Downtown Clinic in=
the
last couple of years.
With Main Street,
she, with the help of the Design Committee, hosted Profit and Lo=
ft,
a workshop on upstairs downtown development, we facilitated the desig=
n of
the 1st Street
Plaza through public workshops and now in the fund-raising stage.&nbs=
p;
Prior to that we developed Design Guidelines and hosted a workshop for
the public about those. Next we'll probably work on visual
improvements along 3=
rd
Street. Christie said, "I
wouldn't have accomplished any of this without the commitment and hel=
p of
all the Design Committee members."
Outside of work, she completed the Master Gardener cla=
ss
in 2008, but I'm still working on getting a good cucumber c=
rop
in Laramie=
st1:City>.
Her husband and she just took a climbing trip to Arizona ov=
er the
Thanksgiving holiday, at which she cooked my first turkey in a dutch oven. Whatever other free time=
she
has is filled exercising her two dogs, Moki and
Bandit, and clicking pictures of our outings.
Thank you Christy on behalf of Laramie
Main Street!

Featured Business: Front Street Tavern=
span>

After months of remodeling, restoring, and renovating,=
the
time has come to open the doors to the public and introduce Sweet
Melissa's new bar, Front Street Tavern. The bar is located in the s=
ame
building as the restaurant, in the space
formerly occupied by the Rock Shop across form the tracks on 1st Street.
It boasts a full selection of mixed drinks, wine, beers, and
handmade mixers, with a strict "no television" policy.
History prevails in the theme and furniture throughout the bar, wit=
h an
eye towards "the way things used to be". The original tin
ceiling and fir floors have been beautifully restored. The fr=
ont
and back bar came out of Hartville,
Wyoming and may be =
the
oldest bar in the state. Indeed, the name, Front Street Tavern, is
derived from the historical name of First Street.
The building which houses the bar and restaurant holds historical
significance in Larami=
e,
as well. The structure was built by one of La=
ramie's
famous pioneers, Henry Bath, who was also responsible for the
construction of the Bath Row houses and the large Bath ranch near Jelm.
Henry Bath arrived in =
Laramie
in the 1870s' and began a prosperous venture of constructing stone
buildings to be used as businesses and residences. He was one of the
first to use quarried stone in his buildings in Laramie (even preceding Old Mai=
n at
the University) which can be seen in the newly exposed rock wall.&n=
bsp;
The Sweet Melissa Cafe building was completed in 1879 and opened
shortly thereafter as the Humboldt House (a restaurant/inn) in 1880=
. It
became one of the first permanent fixtures in downtown Laramie and housed a continuous
series of businesses (illicit and otherwise) throughout its storied
history.
Sweet Melissa Cafe is also celebrating its 10th anniversary, which =
will
coincide with the grand opening of the bar. On Saturday, January 9t=
h,
Sweet Melissa's will be hosting live music in the bar featuring loc=
al
bands, Bas-Mati Unplugged at 6:00 and J=
. Shogren and the Shanghai=
'd
Quartet at 9:00. There will be raffles and door prizes in the
restaurant and bar, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, and Happy Hour all
night. All ages are welcome except in the designated area. The party
begins at 5 PM and goes till midnight.
