Voice of the Festival

There’s something about a Cherry Bakewell tart that instantly takes me back to my childhood in England. I don’t ever recall having a homemade one, back then, we just had the supermarket versions. Maybe Mr. Kipling if we were feeling a bit fancy, but usually it was Tesco or Sainsbury’s.

It’s funny how something so ordinary can carry so much memory, tea time, my mum and dad, my  brothers and that unmistakable taste that just feels like home.

My mom never made anything at home, everything was store-bought. My grandma made a ton of things at home chutneys her own ketchup cakes scones Rock cakes all kinds of stuff but Cherry bakewells weren't something that you really made at home not working class people like me they were just there at the supermarket and you just bought them in it a pack of six.

It's like sausage rolls I ate Supermarket sausage rolls all the time when I lived in England I didn't make my first sausage roll until I moved to the US because I had to because you don't sell them here.

Ask pretty much anyone from the UK what their memories are of cherry Bakewell Tarts and they'll tell you that they used to eat Mr Kipling brand six in a box or the supermarket ones. No one ever made them at home.

So this year, at the International Flavor Food Festival, it’s going to be really special being here in Laramie and finally trying a homemade Cherry Bakewell from Sugar Mouse Cupcake House for the first time, something I never had growing up across the pond. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be something pretty special, not just for me, but for the whole Laramie community.
