20 Years of Downtown Revitalization
This year, Laramie Main Street celebrates 20 years of downtown revitalization. In 2005, we were founded by business owners, concerned citizens, and members of city council as a non-profit to support the economic health and preservation of the historic district. The success of our work is reflected in the growth of local businesses, scale of physical improvements, vibrancy of community events, and the dedication of our staff and volunteers.
While not everyone remembers the district pre Main Street, vintage photos from the 70s and 80s tell the story of a neglected downtown with boarded up storefronts, empty parking lots, and a few dive bars.
Fast forward to today, Laramie Main Street is a Great American Main Street award winner and the district is home to 300+ locally owned businesses, 95 residential units, 30+ hand-painted murals, and countless seasonal events.
“Our staff, board and volunteers steadfast vision for preservation, business support and community building has set our downtown apart as an economic hub and cultural asset for the Gem City”
Director Trey Sherwood shared, “our staff, board and volunteers steadfast vision for preservation, business support and community building has set our downtown apart as an economic hub and cultural asset for the Gem City”.
Return on Investment
Between 2005 and June 2024, $30 million in public and private dollars have been invested in the revitalization of downtown.
Property owners completed 458 renovation projects valued at $17.2 million. The City and non profit partners invested $7.5 million in 54 public improvement projects, from improvements to water infrastructure to public art. In addition, there were 10 new construction projects worth $3.7 million.
Photos of Downtown prior to Laramie Main Street’s formation in 2005:
179 net new businesses have opened downtown since 2005, creating 752 new jobs.
None of this would be possible without community members who have volunteered their time, talents and energies, contributing 66,239 hours worth $1,478,717 to support the vibrancy of downtown.
Looking Ahead
Throughout 2025 we’ll be reflecting on the impact of our work, revisiting our 2012 downtown development plan, celebrating our collaborative partnerships, and highlighting Main Street change makers.
