Our decision to represent Germany this year took some thought. With a handful of international beer styles to choose from—Belgian, Irish, American, and English—one stood out: our German Helles Lager, Meadow Gold.

Light and pale, yet full of flavor and easy drinking—just like Clyde liked it.

Clyde Douglass, my father-in-law, received a draft notice during the Vietnam War and enlisted, as did his brothers. As a journalism major, Clyde was sent to Germany as a war correspondent. While working in the Army correspondence office, he lived and traveled throughout the country. His love of German culture, food, and especially beer grew during that time. He even learned to speak a little German and became deeply enamored with the place and its traditions. And what better cultural staple to appreciate than beer?

During his time in Germany, he was able to save more money than he’d ever had before and spent time exploring the country. After his discharge and return home to Wyoming, he used those savings to buy a 1970 AMX, shown here. Its distinctive paint finish—green-gold with a subtle metallic shimmer—is called Meadow Gold.

This beer is brewed in remembrance of Clyde, and in honor of the influence and legacy he left on a family he loved (and was loved by) dearly.
