Momo plays many roles in my life, but most of all, it tastes like home.
It is the steam rising from a pot on a winter afternoon. It is the aroma of garlic and onions mixed with warm spices. It is soft dough wrapped around tender, spiced chicken , my favorite, sealed carefully by hand.
Back home, “momo day” was a planned family event. The kitchen would fill with the sharp scent of freshly minced garlic, crushed ginger, and coriander. My mom measured spices with instinct, balancing salt, heat, and herbs into the perfect filling. My grandmother rolled each dough circle thin and delicate. My grandfather insisted on kneading the dough himself, convinced no one else could get the texture right. My father diced the ingredients finely. My brother and I wrapped the momo, folding each one with pride.
But the real heart of momo was the chutney. It was bold and unforgettable, made from ripe tomatoes, roasted white sesame seeds, garlic, lots of chilies, fresh coriander, and a bright squeeze of citrus. It was smoky, nutty, spicy, and tangy all at once. The first dip would awaken every sense , heat from the chilies, richness from the sesame, freshness from the herbs. After hours of preparation, we would finally sit together, steam fogging the room, competing over who could eat the most.
Now, far from home, I realize the true flavor I miss most is not just the spice - it is the love wrapped inside every momo.
